Health insurance is genuinely complicated. Not in a way that requires a law degree — but in a way where two plans can look nearly identical on paper and cost completely different amounts, cover completely different doctors, and leave you with completely different bills after a hospital visit.
Most people either pick whatever's cheapest, stick with whatever they had last year without looking at it, or just feel paralyzed by the options and do nothing. None of those are great strategies.
We've been helping people in Calabasas and Hidden Hills sort through this since 1986. We're independent, which means we work with multiple carriers and have no reason to push you toward any particular one. Our job is just to find what actually fits your situation.
Who Usually Comes to Us for Health Insurance
More people than you'd think are out here finding their own coverage. We work with a lot of:
Self-employed people and entrepreneurs
Consultants, freelancers, real estate professionals, entertainers, business owners. Calabasas and Hidden Hills have a ton of them. If nobody's handing you a benefits package, you're figuring this out yourself.
Small business owners
Wanting to offer health insurance to employees but not sure where to start or what it'll cost.
Early retirees
Retired before 65 and not yet on Medicare. This is a gap that surprises a lot of people and the coverage options matter a lot.
People between jobs
You left a job or got laid off. COBRA exists but it's usually expensive. There are often better options.
Young adults aging off parents' plans
Turning 26 is a qualifying life event. You have 60 days to get something in place.
Part-time workers
Not eligible for employer coverage and need to find something on their own.
If any of that sounds like you, we can help.
The Types of Plans We Work With
Individual and Family Plans
These cover you and your family for doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency care, prescriptions, mental health, preventive care — the works. Available through Covered California or directly from carriers outside the marketplace. Which one makes more sense depends on your income and whether you qualify for subsidies.
Covered California
California's state marketplace under the Affordable Care Act. If your household income falls within certain ranges, you may qualify for premium subsidies — sometimes significant ones — that bring your monthly cost down considerably. We're certified to help you figure out if you qualify and how much you'd save. A lot of people assume they don't qualify and never check. Sometimes they're wrong.
Short-Term Health Insurance
If you're between plans, waiting for open enrollment, or just need something to bridge a gap — short-term coverage exists for situations like that. It's not comprehensive but it's better than nothing.
Group Health Insurance for Businesses
If you have employees, offering health insurance is one of the most effective things you can do for recruiting and retention. Group plans are typically more affordable per person than individual plans because the risk is spread across the group. We work with businesses from one employee up and help design something that fits the budget without sacrificing too much on coverage.
Medicare and Medicare Supplement
If you're approaching 65 or already there, Original Medicare leaves gaps — deductibles, copays, coinsurance — that can add up fast. Medicare Supplement plans (Medigap) cover those gaps. Medicare Advantage bundles everything including often dental and vision into one plan. We'll walk you through it without the jargon.
Dental and Vision
These usually aren't included in medical plans and need to be added separately. We handle those too — for individuals, families, and businesses.
The Things That Actually Matter When Comparing Plans
A plan isn't just its monthly premium. When we sit down with clients we look at:
A Note for Self-Employed People
If you're self-employed, you can typically deduct 100% of your health insurance premiums from your federal taxes. That changes the real cost of coverage meaningfully. We always recommend talking to your tax advisor about it — but it's worth knowing before you assume health insurance is out of reach.
We also work with HSA-compatible high-deductible plans, association health plans, and off-exchange options with broader networks — which sometimes make more sense depending on your situation.
A Few Things to Know About California Specifically
California requires residents to have qualifying health insurance or pay a penalty on their state taxes. It's not optional.
Open enrollment runs November 1 through January 31 each year. Outside that window you can only enroll if you have a qualifying life event — losing job-based coverage, getting married or divorced, having a baby, turning 26, moving to a new area. If something in your life has changed recently, you may have a window right now.
Why People Around Here Work With Us
We're independent and we're local. We're not going to steer you toward a plan because it pays us better. We compare what's actually available and tell you honestly what we'd recommend for your situation and why.
We're also certified through Covered California, which matters if you're shopping on the marketplace and want to make sure subsidy eligibility is being handled correctly.
And we've been at it since 1986. Health insurance questions tend to come up at stressful moments — you just lost a job, you're starting a business, you're retiring earlier than expected. Having someone local you can actually call makes those moments a little easier.
We Serve the Whole West Valley
Let's Figure Out What Makes Sense for You
You don't need to come in knowing what you want. Just tell us your situation — who needs coverage, what you're spending now, which doctors you want to keep — and we'll take it from there.
